How do I keep original file names during transfer?

I have just brought a PS3 and I thought I'd transfer some of my media files to it. So I first transferred my media files to an external hard drive all seems fine so far but then when I plug my external hard drive into the PS3 all the file names are changed to weird names not the original names is their anyway to retain the file names during transfer
