How can I change the file extension?

I was working on a project in Photoshop and, like an idiot, i put an abbreviation using a period in the name when i saved it. The only way I know how to change the format is by changing the name and adding %26quot;.jpg%26quot; for example. When i tried this, it only changed the name of the file and didn't help.
