How to change file type on vista?

ive been trying to change a file type on vista and havent been sucessful. i know that normally on XP when you change the file extension at the file name it changes but that doesnts seem to work on vista so can you please tell me how to succesfully change a file

to be more specific im trying to change a JPG file to PNG so please reply ASAP

thanks in advanceHow to change file type on vista?Just changing the extension on a file does NOT change the contents of the file any more than changing the cover of a book translates the book into another language.

If the program that you're opening the file in happens to understand that file format, it may silently accept it even with the wrong type, but that doesn't mean the file has changed.

The only real way to convert a file is to open it in a program that can read that file type and can write the other file type. Microsoft Paint can do that.

Hope that helps. How to change file type on vista?you could open it with a program like Gimp or Photoshop, go to file, then save as, then save 'example.jpg' as 'example.png' it will probably ask you a bunch of ****, just click through it and it should be saved as a PNG.
