How do I change the extension on a file?

I downloaded a video that was uploaded as a PowerPoint file. In order to properly watch it, I have to change the .ppt in the file name to .avi. If I open the file as is with Windows Media Player, I can access the sound but not the picture. I have no idea how to change the extension.
