How to change a name of a mp3 file without making it un-useable?

I have Windows XP SP2. I download couple songs on my computer and i have to change the name of the title of the mp3 file. When i do that, i get this message.

if you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable.

Are you sure you want to change it?

and i click yes. and than it becomes a unknown file which i can't simply open by double clicking it.

Any methods on changing the name of a mp3 file without making it unusable???How to change a name of a mp3 file without making it un-useable?Goto Control Panel, Folder Options, View Tab,
