How can i rename a file without it saying it may be unuseable?

whenever i try to rename a file, a box pops up %26amp; says %26quot;If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?%26quot; %26amp; i did click yes before, but it was unusable! Please help me!How can i rename a file without it saying it may be unuseable?every file name has an extension, .doc, .jpg, .cdr, .pdf, etc. that identifies the file type to the computer. If you have your file %26quot;Folder Options/View%26quot; to hide these for known file types, you will not be shown the exntension when you view the file list. It helps to show the file type.

You probably are not showing the file type, so when, for instance, you list a photo that is in a .jpg format, all you see is the name, not the extension.

Take a file named: %26quot;photo.jpg%26quot;

All you see is the part %26quot;photo%26quot;. You do not see the %26quot;.jpg%26quot; part, which is part of the file name, just hidden from view.

So, if you want to change the name to %26quot;myphoto%26quot;, you cannot just use that. The entire name is %26quot;photo.jpg%26quot;, so you must change the name to %26quot;myphoto.jpg%26quot;

...and that, is as they say, is that.

%26quot;Nothing screams poor workmanship like wrinkles in the duct tape%26quot;How can i rename a file without it saying it may be unuseable?Don't change the filename extension, which are the 3 characters after the last period (.) and it won't say that and you won't make your file unusable. The 3 characters are used by the computer to recognize what kind of file it is and what program to open it with.How can i rename a file without it saying it may be unuseable?you don't mention the reason why you need to change the file name but i can offer this

the file name consists of basically 2 parts. the name followed by a period and the extension. changing the name - the part before the period is not a problem (as long as you don't use any reserved characters). however changing the extension or removing the period will alter how the operating system thinks of the file.

example

your original file - myfile.txt. this extension (txt) is typically associated with the program notepad

changed to - myfile.123. the extension 123 likely has no program associated with it.

if you change the file name to - myfile123.txt then notepad will open the file up normally

hope that helps.How can i rename a file without it saying it may be unuseable?Probably because if you right clicked on it down to rename and then started typing over you wiped out the suffix so it doesnt know what program to open with. Rename again and if it is a word doc add in .doc at the end, if Excel, .xls etc (pre 2007 versions)
